Riding the Wave: What to Do in the First 90 Seconds
By Recovery Companion
The ninety-second truth
Most cravings peak and begin to fade within about ninety seconds. That doesn't mean it feels short — in the moment, it can feel like it will last forever.
But knowing that the wave is coming down can change how you meet it.
Step one: don't fight it
The instinct is to push the craving away, to argue with it, to tell yourself you shouldn't be feeling this. But fighting a wave just makes it hit harder.
Instead, try letting it be there. Not welcoming it, not feeding it — just acknowledging it. There it is. A craving. I can feel it.
Step two: ground your body
While the wave rises, bring your attention to something physical:
- Press your feet into the floor
- Hold something cold — ice, a cold can, even a wet cloth
- Breathe out longer than you breathe in
Your body needs to know it's safe right now. Grounding sends that signal.
Step three: wait it out
You don't have to win an argument with the craving. You just have to outlast it.
Ninety seconds. That's it. The wave will start to come down on its own.
And every time you ride it — even imperfectly — you teach your brain something important: this feeling passes, and I'm still here.
